Our Little Sojourn to Tassie

We made a number of trips to Tasmania for little breaks over 2007. It's quite convenient and not too expensive to make the trip across Bass Strait from Melbourne, especially when you manage to plan it for the off-season. Here are some pics taken during a short stay over Easter last year (2007).

As we only had a few days, we mainly spent the time in Hobart, visiting the weekend Markets at Salamanca and taking strolls around the waterfront and such.

A mere 30 minutes away from Hobart is the little tourist town of Richmond, home of Australia's oldest road bridge.

We did manage to do some camping however, making a trip to Mount Field National Park. We were hoping to get there in time to witness the 'turning of the fagus'. No this is not some feral homosexual coming of age ceremony in the Tassie wilderness, but the mass burst of autumnal colours of Australia's only native deciduous tree. Anyway to cut a long story short, after five hours of rather tough tramping over rough terrain up to Tarn Shelf, it seemed that we were too early in the season and the trees had not started to change their livery yet. Oh well...the scenery was breathtaking all the same.

South Island - New Zealand

Hello folks! After a long hiatus, I finally managed to get back here to post up some new pics! Sorry to those of you who'd checked back here hoping to find something new in the past few months. I haven't been here for such a long time myself that I couldn't log in because I'd forgotten the password and had to reset it! Anyway going back a few months now to August-September last year (2007), we made a trip to New Zealand's South Island for a bit of skiing and some sight seeing. So here are some photos...

Some sunny weather at Coronet Peak near Queenstown, New Zealand. This field was our first ski stop but as you can see from the photo, it was late in the season and the snowcover wasn't that great. So we soon moved on.

The cover was much better over at The Remarkables, which are the second nearest slopes to Queenstown. Kingy says, "Do you think my goggles are gonna be big enough?"

Having a good time at The Remarkables.

After we left the ski slopes, we took a long but scenic drive down along the South Island's southwest coast where we jumped aboard a cruise at Milford Sound. The weather was wet but that meant spectacular scenery with hundreds of waterfalls into the Sound. We also saw penguins and southern fur seals on this cruise so we had a terrific day there.
